Sumunar was established in 2002 to promote understanding of and appreciation for Indonesian music, dance, and culture through education and performance. Sumunar offers community classes in Javanese gamelan and dance; school residencies that teach traditional music, dance, and puppetry; and public performances of music, dance, and wayang kulit (shadow puppets). Sumunar has received grants in support of its work from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Knight Foundation, the Asian-Pacific Endowment, and others.
Sumunar is part of the Indonesian Performing Arts Association of Minnesota, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization.
